It’s a long way from rural Mississippi in international blues recognition, but then Johnny Rawls has never yet found a road he was afraid to travel. Between touring with such legends as Z.Z. Hill, O.V. Wright, and Little Johnny Taylor as well as forging a career of his own on the rough and ready southern blues circuit known affectionately in the African-American blues community as the “chitlin’ circuit,” Rawls has spent the better part of twenty years on the road. He is well touted for playing his sweet soul’d fusion of blues, R& B, and emotion-laden pop stylings for audiences throughout the south.

He has a music career that has included being O.V. Wright’s and Little Johnny Taylor’s band leader, founding a record label Touch, recording and producing his own work as well as other artists, while keeping up with his “white line fever” performances.

Rawls’ musical tastes are varied with a style that is between gospel, blues, and good hard soul music, seasoned generously with lush pop structured melodies as well as hard-driving rhythmic impetus, that kicks with rock & roll energy.

Start the New Year at "A Last Little Piece of Old Key West"

Join your friends and make new ones at the Schooner Wharf Bar New Year's Eve Celebration, where the past meets the future and the present is a whole lot of fun.

Schooner Wharf Bar will present its original New Year's Eve tradition, the "Lowering of the Pirate Wench" from the 75-foot high mast of Schooner Adirondack III docked in front of the popular waterfront watering hole. They will be lowering a pirate wench, Evalena Worthington, co-owner of Schooner Wharf, against large illuminated countdown numbers – from 10, 9, 8… until the stroke of midnight where "2011" will light up to launch the new year. All of this is against a backdrop of the ship's crew dressed as pirates, the release of white balloons and cannon fire. Complimentary party favors, hats and horns add to the festive atmosphere.

The day's fun starts early with live music guaranteed to take you dancing into the new year. Michael McCloud and Friends begin at noon, followed by The Doerfels, a family of incredibly talented young musicians. Enjoy country, gospel, and bluegrass songs, interspersed with a touch of blues, jazz, swing, classical and originals. They put on an engaging show for all ages. Then Cool Breeze, one of the hottest boogie bands around, will electrify the stage. Then the Lazy Way stage behind Schooner Wharf will be filled with The Doerfels
a family of talented young musicians, whose average age is only 17! From New York
State, these 2008 Florida State Bluegrass Champions, have wowed audiences and
impressed critics from Branson, MO up and down the East Coast, to Canada.

Despite their youth, one Keys reporter has said about their show, "Seasoned musicians
watched in awe." The core band consists of the oldest son and leader TJ, 22, on banjo;
Kim, 20, on the fiddle; Eddy, 17, on mandolin, Joey, 16, on bass and cello, Ben, 15,

20th Annual Schooner Wharf Lighted Boat Parade brightens the bight

Maritime merriment will fill the harbor for the holidays, as the 20th Annual Schooner
Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade sails past and brightens up the bight.

The parade begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, but the festivities start early on the
Harbor Walk of Lights. The Gerald Adams Elementary School Steel Your Heart Band
will tap out calypso Christmas music starting at 6 p.m. at Schooner Wharf Bar, where
drink specials on Absolut Vodka and Yeungling will add to the festivity. A piping hot
ham dinner with all the fixin's will keep everyone full and happy while they line the
waterfront for the best parade viewing spot.

The Boys and Girls Club of the Keys will have an exciting prize booth along the Harbor
Walk, where participants can spin the giant wheel and win a prize. Handmade ornaments
and holiday beverages will be on sale throughout the afternoon and evening to raise
money for their club.

Last year, 32 vessels of all shapes and sizes dazzled the crowd and judges with their
Christmas creativity. The Coast Guard led the parade with Santa and his reindeer, while
other vessels featured thousands of lights and holiday music.

The Harbor Walk becomes the island's holiday headquarters, and the parade is a must-see
event in Key West, where we don't need snow to make our holidays bright.

The island is a warm winter wonderland, with just as much holiday spirit and goodwill
wishes as the North Pole.

A captain's meeting for the parade will take place Friday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. on the
Schooner Wharf upper deck. Over $24,000 in prizes and bragging rights are up for grabs.
Parade participants are encouraged to register by Thursday, Dec. 9, but entries will be
accepted as late as the day of the parade.

'Tis the Season at Schooner Wharf!

Schooner Wharf Bar's Christmas tree is now decorated in full holiday
charm, with ornaments hung on Sunday during its annual Tree Trimming
party. The holiday spirit was high as locals and visitors gathered 'round with
warm Swedish glÃ¶gg, hot apple jack or eggnog and contributed creative
homemade or nautical pieces.

Ornament contest results:
Most Original went to Becky Rios, with her hand-crocheted stuff dogs
adapted from Schooner Wharf's original dogs painting; 2nd place: Capt.
Kelly George with his Christmas present featuring Lighted Boat Parade

Calling Captain Claus!

Mistletoe goes on the mast, and running lights should twinkle in the appropriate red and
green holiday colors.

It's time for the 20th Annual Schooner Wharf Bar & Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade
to set sail Saturday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. So captains should start designing their nautical
holiday for vessels of all sizes.

Dinghies, kayaks, ships, and schooners all are eligible to share in Key West's version of
Christmas and to compete for more than $20,500 in prizes that is up for grabs this year
for the 12 winning places. There is also a $4,000 FREE RAFFLE for all participating
boats.

The family-friendly parade begins in the Historic Seaport and makes a close pass in front
of Schooner Wharf Bar, where the judges stand is located, for the best view of Santa
riding dolphins, lighted pelicans, sea horses and manatees all pulling SantaÃ¢ï¿½ï¿½s sleigh.
Candy canes have danced on the water and Santa has climbed the mast of a majestic
schooner in past parades.

The festivities kick off at Schooner Wharf with the Gerald Adams Elementary Steel Your
Heart Band at 6:00, followed by the popular George Victory and the Observant Lion
Band, to entertain the holiday crowds.

Entry forms are now available and a $25 registration fee will ensure a safe parade for
everyone. A Captains Meeting will take place Friday, Dec. 10 on the upper deck of
Schooner Wharf with free Yuengling beer, Absolut and Malibu punch and Schooner
Galley hors d' oeuvres.

New this year will be a fundraising booth with proceeds to benefit Boys and Girls Club of

The not-to-be-missed highlight of the Christmas season in Key West is the 20th Annual Schooner Wharf Bar Lighted Boat Parade on Saturday, December 11th. Vessels of every size and shape deck their hulls and light up the night with their creativity and originality to the delight of locals and visitors alike. Santa Claus has been spotted at the helm, ditching his sleigh for a center console or sailboat with mistletoe hanging from the mast. His first mates have included gingerbread men and the Grinch. Other times, dolphins have replaced cold-weather reindeer, ushering in Santa and his sleigh packed with lighted presents.

Festivities start at 6 p.m. with the Gerald Adams Steel Your Heart Band, and the parade begins at 8 p.m. Boats will come into the Bight and pass in front of the judges' stand at Schooner Wharf. The cigar trade soon found its way across the Florida Straits from Cuba. There was only one cigar factory in Key West in 1831, but it soon became big business. The Cuban Revolution caused thousands of cigar workers to emigrate to Key West and this caused the industry to grow very quickly. By 1890, 129 cigar factories were in operation and bringing in good profits. However, union labor strikes caused the owners problems and promises of tax-free land and cheaper labor enticed them to move to Tampa. Key West soon lost its place as America's leading producer of hand-rolled Cuban cigars.
